Christ at the Center: The Fulcrum of Biblical Covenantalism – Introduction: Part 1a, 1b, 1c, Jesus and the New Covenant: Part 2a, 2b, 2c, The Covenant God Incarnate: Part 3a, 3b The Role of Jesus, the Word, as the Ground of Meaning and Significance As I see it, the identification of Jesus Christ with the New Covenant which actualizes the other eternal covenants, not only secures the promissory stipulations within those covenants, it ensures the vertical personal relationships that have …
Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of free speech and freedom of religion in America should be irate about how the mainstream media, together with certain politicians, have turned against Chick-fil-a. Tolerance for these people might be accurately understood as “if you don’t agree with us you are intolerant!” Well, here’s a thoughtful article to reflect upon: http://www.dennyburk.com/two-lies-about-chick-fil-a-perpetuated-in-the-media/ P.S. with thanks to Jim Peet …
Series so far: Christ at the Center: The Fulcrum of Biblical Covenantalism – Introduction: Part 1a, 1b, 1c, Jesus and the New Covenant: Part 2a, 2b, 2c, The Covenant God Incarnate: Part 3a Although it is not within the design of the present series to demonstrate it, the incarnation of the Christ, the Son of God, is a watershed event eagerly anticipated in the Old Testament. What has begun to be shown is that Christ’s relationship to the New Covenant …
I like reading John Byl’s material. He is a first rate Christian thinker in the “Bible and Science” debate in the presuppositional mold. He doesn’t post too often, but his writing is always interesting. He has recently posted a piece on theologian Wayne Grudem’s rejection of evolution while accepting the “scientific evidence” undergirding so as to believe in Old Earth Creationism. This position, so popular among evangelical scholars, is, as Byl shows, inconsistent. Moreover, it violates the principle of the …
Previous Post I have reduced my Introduction down to three shorter pieces for ease of reading and digestion. This brief piece finishes off the exposition of Colossians 1:13-20 and leads into a preamble on the New Covenant. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 …
Continued from last time on Colossians 1:15b There is a great deal which might be said about the term “firstborn.” Primarily of course it concerns right of inheritance and prominence among brethren. As the examples of Isaac and Jacob and Judah and Solomon show, the first to be born is not the main idea in “firstborn” (prototokos). The primary idea involves status, not physical birth. Notice how this is true in Psalm 89:27, ” I also shall make him My …
Introduction To The Series There are all sorts of places one can launch out from when writing about the grand scheme of things in the Bible. Certain passages are just packed with theology! This has been seen and utilized by many writers down through the ages. From John Calvin to John Stott men have built solid arguments from expounding a few verses and establishing connections with the Biblical worldview. For all his faults Karl Barth is often a master at …
I like John Byl’s stuff. He doesn’t post often, but he is worth following. Here is an informative post about the spread of evolutionism in the PCA in the form of two books about Adam; one by Peter Enns, the other by C. John Collins. As someone who “naively” believes what the Bible says, I want to say, “Are you guys kidding?” PCA Divided On Biblical Adam While not as good as Byl’s piece, a while back I wrote …
This is the last set of my “Theses” about Creation. I hope they have stirred some thought. You can read the previous posts here: part 1; part 2; part 3. 16. This doctrine leaves room for man, as he comes from the hand of the Creator, to be responsible to believe God and to obey God. Whatever the effects of sin, this is man as God created him to be. The obedience of man to the good dictates of God …
